On March 13th, 2025, the Infection Prevention and Control Rwanda Organization (IPCRO) hosted a highly informative and engaging virtual training session titled "Preparedness for Highly Infectious Diseases Epidemic & Outbreak Investigation." This session brought together participants from leading institutions, including the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali, University Teaching Hospital of Butare, King Faisal Hospital, and the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC).
The training was designed to provide health professionals with critical knowledge on managing outbreaks, with a focus on the early stages of detection and investigation of highly infectious diseases. The session was skillfully led by Dr. Marie Claire Ndayisaba, a seasoned expert in infection prevention, while Dr. Jean Jacques Irakiza moderated the session, ensuring a smooth and interactive experience.
The event began with an insightful experience-sharing segment by the IPC team from the University Teaching Hospital of Butare, led by Jerome Nsanzimana and Marie Josee Niyibikora, who are the Registered Nurses and IPC focal persons. They shared their detailed approach to outbreak investigation, starting with the essential first step: detecting and confirming the outbreak and its causative agent.
Participants were guided through the comprehensive steps of outbreak investigation, from identifying and defining cases to epidemiological analysis, risk assessments, and implementing control measures. The training emphasized the importance of effective communication, coordination among healthcare teams, and the continuous review of responses to ensure the success of the intervention.
A key takeaway from the training was the importance of preparedness in managing highly infectious disease outbreaks. Dr. Ndayisaba highlighted that early intervention, particularly in the first 72 hours of an outbreak, can significantly alter the trajectory of an epidemic, saving lives and reducing transmission.
The session concluded with a call for continuous learning and adaptation of outbreak management strategies to build resilient health systems capable of tackling future infectious disease threats. The IPCRO virtual training is an essential tool for equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills required to respond efficiently to outbreaks and safeguard public health
Stay tuned for more training opportunities as IPCRO continues to promote preparedness in the fight against infectious diseases!
