Infection Prevention and Control Rwanda Organization (IPCRO)
AMS Program
Here are some specific IPCRO interventions that can be employed:
Infection Control Practices
Hand Hygiene: Implement and reinforce hand hygiene protocols to prevent the spread of infections and reduce the need for antimicrobials.
Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Ensure appropriate use of PPE to prevent the transmission of infections and minimize unnecessary antimicrobial use.
Surveillance and Monitoring
Infection Surveillance: Monitor infection rates and trends to identify areas where antimicrobial use can be optimized.
Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance: Track resistance patterns to inform appropriate prescribing and stewardship strategies.
Education and Training
Staff Education: Provide ongoing education to healthcare staff about the importance of antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention.
Patient Education: Educate patients about the risks of antimicrobial overuse and the importance of adhering to prescribed treatments.
Antimicrobial Stewardship Policies
Guideline Development: Develop and implement evidence-based guidelines for the appropriate use of antimicrobials.
Review and Approval: Establish processes for the review and approval of antimicrobial prescriptions to ensure they align with stewardship goals.
Environmental Controls
Cleaning and Disinfection: Ensure effective cleaning and disinfection practices to prevent environmental contamination and the spread of resistant pathogens.
Isolation Protocols: Implement isolation protocols for patients with resistant infections to prevent transmission.
Data Collection and Feedback
Regular Audits: Conduct audits of antimicrobial use and infection control practices to identify areas for improvement.
Feedback Mechanisms: Provide feedback to healthcare providers about their antimicrobial prescribing patterns and infection control practices.
